Republicans bash 'anti-Catholic' DFL ad

Republican leaders called on DFL gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton to denounce a DFL mailer in a legislative race that some conservatives have deemed anti-Catholic. “This is in-your-face anti-Catholicism,” said state Sen. Amy Koch, R-Buffalo. “It’ a new low in Minnesota.” Dayton agreed at least part of the mailer went too far. “I believe the brochure’s picture showing a man of the cloth is inappropriate,” Dayton said Wednesday in a statement. “I believe that it is inappropriate to bring religion into a campaign as this image and others do.” Dayton said, however, that the mailer was right to point out that leaders of the faith...

C.J.: Fired is the word to use for Libin's departure

Word is that WCCO-TV news director Scott Libin's departure was a straight-on firing. Although the exit is being framed in other ways, staffers who just got the e-mail believe this the first step by GM Brien Kennedy, who's been on the job since June, putting his stamp on the newsroom. In the e-mail, Kennedy thanks Libin for his contributions. This was Libin's second tour of duty with a Twin Cities TV station. He was formerly at KSTP-TV. As you will soon see in shot Friday at the roast for retiring WCCO-TV anchor Don Shelby, Libin seemed himself, calm, collected, affable. At about the 1-minute 26-second mark on the video, Libin gave me a hard time about admitting that my presence at the roast,...

Practical Lori Swanson merits vote for attorney general

Republican attorney general challenger Chris Barden's résumé is certainly impressive: a Harvard law degree, a doctorate in clinical psychology, and prestigious consulting gigs. But whether he's a good fit for this powerful Minnesota office is an entirely different question. After a wide-ranging interview, the Editorial Board's conclusion is that he is not the right candidate and that DFL incumbent Lori Swanson merits a second four-year term. Barden looks good on paper, but in person he's clearly an ideologue who sees the office as a way to accomplish the GOP's shopworn wish list: challenging federal health care reform's constitutionality, reigniting 2008 Minnesota Senate...

Fired KSTP-TV reporter says his gay joke was irresponsible

Mark Saxenmeyer What started out as a joke ended up with a reporter being fired at KSTP-TV. Mark Saxenmeyer wanted to do story about a gay Minneapolis couple who attended a White House Easter egg hunt but ended up handing it off to his co-worker Katherine Johnson. While she was in the process of writing the piece, Saxenmeyer added a few things to her script to make her laugh. "They were based on a conversation she and I...

Late honor comes to Civil War soldiers

Nearly 150 years of family history melt away when 90-year-old Stan Frear opens a tiny, pocket-sized Book of Proverbs in his art-filled apartment. His great-grandfather, Capt. Dudley P. Chase, signed the little book's first page, dated it April 28, 1863, and jotted down his location: "Camp near Falmouth, Va." Five days later, the logging camp foreman and Union sharpshooter from Minneapolis was shot through the shoulder and mortally wounded, dying six days later at a Washington hospital after his left arm was amputated. The next handwritten inscription in the prayer book comes from Frear's grandmother, Clara, who was 9 when her dad died: "This book was taken out of Father's...

Emily Maynard is starting to develop some serious feelings for some of the guys fighting for her affections on The Bachelorette. Not only did she kiss three guys last night (passionately, might we add), but Emily let go of two of the contestants before the rose ceremony even went down! She knows what she wants! First up, Emily went on a one-on-one date with Chris and ended up climbing up the wall of a landmark museum in Charlotte! Not only was it scary hanging from the side of a building, but a huge storm was rolling in when Emily and Chris decided to complete the...

KSTP hit with $1 million defamation verdict

A Dakota County jury has awarded a holistic healer from Hudson, Wis., $1 million in compensatory damages from KSTP-TV for a March 2009 story it aired about her treatment of a patient, attorneys for both sides said Monday night. The jury's award is believed to be the largest verdict ever in a Minnesota defamation lawsuit. Jurors made the award Friday after a weeklong trial before District Judge Richard Spicer, and returned Monday to deliberate on punitive damages. The jury declined to issue a punitive award. Attorney Paul Hannah, who represented KSTP, said he based his argument against punitive damages on the fact that the $1 million...

KSTP's Rosendale will live his NYC dream

Somebody at KSTP-TV has to be breathing more easily with word that Gus Rosendale is leaving. The anchor-reporter is going home to NYC to work at a station which he is not allowed to divulge. I hear it's WNBC. "I got a chance to get an on-air gig in New York, and Hubbard Broadcasting [the ABC affiliate in the Twin Cities] let me chase that, and I'm pretty psyched about that," Rosendale said when I talked to him Wednesday. "Management, Lindsay Radford [news director] and the Hubbards let me chase this dream." He's been in the metro about 13 months. "My last day is Friday. I start in New York in a couple of weeks. I was really happy here and enjoyed my time in the Twin...

Pretty thin mints for 60 years of flying

In recognition of Bob Reardon's 60 years in aviation on Oct. 1, Delta Air Lines is reportedly honoring him with cake and hors d'oeuvres at an employee gathering. Cake. Hors d'oeuvres. Seems a rather thin corporate response. United Airlines painted Thomas Stuker's name on the nose of a 747 when he became the first passenger to reach 10 million miles. Stuker's been flying since 1982, according to a July Portfolio.com article. Reardon, of St. Paul, has been flying since Oct. 1, 1951, back when his airline, way pre-Delta merger, was Northwest Orient. Cake and hors d'oeuvres. Feels very low-key, as if Delta management would just as soon ignore it, I told Reardon, 87. "I'm...

Wolves' history of blunders rains on the Rubio parade

David Kahn sat at a table inside Target Center. To his right sat a promising 6-3 point guard. The Wolves boss introduced the young man, a few reporters asked questions, and the event quietly wrapped up in a matter of minutes, without cheering team employees or budding marketing campaigns. That player was not Ricky Rubio. That player was better than Ricky Rubio. That player had started 46 games in the NBA, had averaged 12.4 points, 5.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 2008-09 against the best players in the world, while Rubio last season, in Spain, averaged 6.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds and lost his starting job in the playoffs....

C.J.: Rubio hobbles on crutches dreamed up in Minnesota

Ricky Rubio hobbled in the glamorous footsteps of Halle Berry when Mobilegs crutches brought the injured Timberwolf to Tuesday's dog-and-pony show. Mobilegs are award-winning, ergonomically correct crutches designed by Minnesotan Jeff Weber. I first saw the crutches with the meshed arm saddle a few weeks ago when I visited WCCO-TV anchor Frank Vascellaro, who was recuperating from left hip replacement surgery. Vascellaro absolutely raved about the crutches, which he described as "cool looking" as he explained how they work and talked about the theory behind their design and the local guy who created them. (Dear "Where's Frank?" e-mailers: Since I wrote that he had bum...

KSTP names Denver man sports anchor

Just over a month after announcing Rod Simons wouldn't be retained as its main sports anchor, KSTP-TV has hired Phil Aldridge from the ABC affiliate in Denver to assume that role. Aldridge has been in Denver since October 2005 and is listed as a sports reporter and producer on the station's website. He was one of two people KSTP brought to the Twin Cities for an interview and will receive a three-year contract. "We looked at about 100 tapes and the one thing that made Phil stand out is that he's a smart, creative writer," KSTP news director Lindsay Radford said Thursday. "He knows when to pick a moment and have fun with it but isn't afraid to be edgy or go after a team or...

Tough hours - not Dave - drove Chikage away

KSTP-TV weekend meteorologist Chikage Windler has taken her prognosticating skills to Indianapolis' WTHR-TV for "a better quality of life." That's actually not a swipe at KSTP, which has a reputation for having a disposable attitude toward talent. "Rob [Hubbard, the GM] called me on Saturday to wish me well, and I told him I had three of the best years in my career here at KSTP," said Windler. But "in the last year and a half now that my schedule has gone to what it is, it's been a rough time. I have been like a yo-yo. My shift has been doing Friday nights, Saturday mornings, Saturday nights, Sunday mornings. Back-to-back short turnarounds," she told me Tuesday...

Fans of Steve & Sharon will be particularly thrilled to see they will be making a live appearance as well. Here's the press release: St. Paul, MN – September 29, 2009 – Minnesota native Louie Anderson will be the guest co-host on “Twin Cities Live” Thursday, October 1st and Friday, October 2nd. Louie is one of the funniest and best-known comedians working today. Also known for being the former host of “Family Feud” and his appearances on late night talk shows, television audiences love him. updated 10:48 a.m. ET Feb. 12, 2010 MINNEAPOLIS -- Sports enthusiasts in the Twin Cities now have another option for listening to around-the-clock sports talk on the radio. On Thursday, KSTP-AM announced they'd be switching formats -- from talk radio to strictly sports talk radio. The Hubbard-owned station reached a long-term deal with ESPN. In fact, the station will eventually become known as 1500...

KSTP, Star Tribune announce job cuts

The local media’s holiday season just got a little bluer. The Star Tribune told its staff Thursday that it will eliminate up to 25 newsroom jobs through buyouts or layoffs. KSTP-TV, the Twin Cities’ ABC affiliate, is expected to announce major cuts Friday morning during an all-station meeting. Insiders project at least 18 of those layoffs will come from the newsroom. The casualties confirmed Thursday include producer Dana Benson, who recently filled in as news director, and investigative reporter Kristi Piehl, who has won two Emmys during her three years at the station. “I was told that my news director and other people went to bat for me, but that this was a decision made...
